I was quoted $650 value for trade-in and opted for it over a private sale due to the hassle, and because I figured Apple might swap out the 5 year-old battery and give it an extra few years. It was mainly used on one desk with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, so it was in near perfect condition - the screen has no markings at all, and the only wear and tear was from tiny scratches picked up over 5 years on the desk and the odd bit of travel for study. I bought a new 16' MacBook Pro because my 2016 15' was way too slow and loud for development work.
